HB Distance Derby 10 miler race recap + review

WORKOUT – race 10 miles/1:15:51  + 3.25 miles/28 mins

(Didn’t bring my camera so this is gonna be short)

RACE RECAP

This morning I ran the Huntington Beach Distance Derby 10 mile race.

Wake up was at 5am; I was tired and wanting to go back to sleep.  (I’ve been sleeping weird lately and getting up very early, 4:30am yesterday so this morning I was pretty beat, like more haggard than usual)

I thought about blowing off the race and going back to bed, but I got up, had coffee and stretched.  I left the house at 6am and for the second time in an hour, thought about throwing in the towel when it starting raining lightly on the drive to HB.

I parked by 6:40am, grabbed my bib, went to the bathroom and by then it was time to start.

The course is a flat bike path along the beach, 2.5 miles out and back south and the same going north.

My goal was to run about 7:45 miles and if I ran anything with 8’s, I’d gouge my eyes out with someone’s running spike.

The race started and surprisingly for once, I got right into a good pace, around 7:40, instead of starting out way too fast.  And then I pretty much ran that for the rest of the race.

I felt really good for the whole race (unlike last year!) so I probably should have ran faster and been even more aggressive in my pacing.

I finished in 1:15:51, 7:35 min/mile pace.  I was 50th place overall, 10th woman, and 3rd in my age division.

I cooled down and ran a slower 3.25 miles/28 mins to get a half distance in for the day.

RACE REVIEW

I’m not going to review the race again since you can find my original review HERE, but I’ll add a couple things that were new this year, the 56th year for the race, the oldest road race in Orange County:

-chip timing

-better swag

Last year we got a cotton t shirt and water bottle so the backpack bag was an upgrade even though the shirts were cotton again.

-better finish line snacks

There was water, Activate energy drink, lots of bananas, apples, oranges, Trader Joe’s trail mix and cereal bars, and a few other things I think.

The only thing that was worse this year was the weather… slightly raining and wet.

A fun, small, cheap ($25) race.  The end.

*Something else worthy of a running spike to the eye?  “blends”.  over it. already.
